How to Hold Your Camera, by Joe McNally

I am working on an article about camera holding techniques, but while you’re waiting, I thought you might like to watch this entertaining video by Photography Guru Joe McNally dispensing some advice on Da Grip of the camera.

  1. Holding a camera still is hard – it took us 5 hours to get this shot… no joke!

    Keep up the good work

  2. You could say that – maybe wouldnt agree after 4.30 hours and am soaking wet from splash backs but yes i spose it was 🙂

  3. Joe’s suggestions may have some benefit. I found that the shoulder technique seemed to help some but I suspect that a) it helps to have a ‘tall’ camera with a motor drive or battery grip (or shorter neck?), and b) a little extra meat on your bones might help a bit too. It seemed to help maybe just slightly more than pressing elbows to my sides/ribs–elbows up was noticeably worse. Leaning my shoulder against something (like a tree or wall) while shooting also had a similar benefit.

  4. I cannot wait to see the article!
